Have a good feel of your mattress, can you detect the diameter of the springs as a series of ridges, that shows how much the fillings have compacted and how worn the insulating layer has become. Over a period of time, springs can go rusty and a musty smell can develop, especially if you do not air the mattress regularly. Other forms of deterioration are invisible to the eye, but shouldn not be ignored. Did you know we all shed around 500 grams of dust in our beds each year, and sweat half a pint or more every night. Mattresses also get quite dusty through a mixture of disintegrating fillings and human skin scales, dead dust mites and dust mite droppings. Dust mites like mattresses, the older the better, because they love the warm humid atmosphere.
Three or more Yes answers to the questions below and the danger signs are there, five or more and it is definitely time to get a new mattress.
Is the mattress 7 years old or more?
Do you ever wake up with neck or back ache?
Is the mattress cover torn or stained?
Can you feel springs or ridges beneath the surface of the mattress?
Can you hear creaks, crunches or other noises when you move around in on your mattress?
Do you and your partner roll together unintentionally?
Do your partner's movements easily disturb you?
Is the mattress uneven or sagging?
Would you be embarrassed if your neighbours saw your mattress without its covers?
If your mattress does not come up to scratch, its time to invest in a new one, and remember, you get what you pay for. So spend as much as you can afford, every 100 pound you spend will cost less than 3p a night over 10 years!
